HARDWARE/PERFORMANCE
The Jiayu G5 has the same hardware you’ll see with the Jiayu G4T smartphone. It is powered by a snappy mid range MT6589T Quad Core processor with a maximum clock speed of 1.5 GHz, although it list to support 2 GB DDR3 RAM and 32 GB ROM, the stock version is only equipped with a 1 GB DDR3 RAM and a 4 GB ROM, considering that on the same price you’ll be getting a much better spec Jiayu G4T. Unfortunately, the G5 only comes with a 720p HD Display instead of a 1080p which has become a trend nowadays. Although it does come with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 Protection. More so, the G5 runs Android 4.2.1 Jellybean out of the box.
Performance is similar to Jiayu G4T which questions the uniqueness of the new model, a 1080p display would have set it apart from the G4 series but both phones are uncannily similar. Synthetic benchmark gauge between 16000 to 17000 points on antutu, which is impressive, however the lack of 1080p support is clearly a head turner. Considering such phones like iOcean X7, Zopo C2, Faea F2, Voto X2 support 1080p display and also equipped with the same hardware underneath. Price wise, its much expensive than most 1080p capable smartphones in the market. We think the only difference lies on the phone’s appearance. The Jiayu G5 looks stunning, it looks similar to iPhone and even has a back rear design that mimics its appearance.
CAMERA
The phone features Dual Camera 13 megapixel rear with LED flash and a 5.0 megapixel front camera. Images are sharp especially with good lighting, although quality dips on low light situation. The phone does feature an LED flash and supports features such as flashlight, burst shots, 720p quality audio and video recording @ 30fps. Although, interpolation is present which is evident when pixels are resized or simply if images are compared and zoomed in.
BODY/BATTERY
Stock comes only with a 2000mAh battery, although you can get a 3000mAh battery separately. Which basically means that choosing the bigger battery cost more, although most of us likely would choose a much hefty one, the Jiayu G4T does come with a stock 3000mAh battery. Jiayu does continue its reign to equipped phones with a massive battery since its dual core versions of the Jiayu G3. A 2000mAh battery is enough to last a day with mixed usage, but a 3000mAh battery can last up to 2 to 3 days on a single charge with moderate to heavy use. It is also worthy to note that the MT6589T is well known for its optimal power consumption capabilities.
A gorgeous and sleek ergonomics design, looks very similar to iPhone 5, rear design clearly gives it away. Although some features are similar to Jiayu G4, the design is uncanny of iPhone 5, “maybe G5 stands for iphone 5 knock-off who knows”. Dimensions reveal 130.1 x 63.5 x 7.85 mm (with 2000mAh battery) (148g) and 9.85 mm for 3000mAh battery with a narrow 2.5 mm bezel offering for more screen room. The following ports and interface includes power button located on the side, at the back is the 13 megapixel camera with LED Flash. On the sides is the volume rocker and power button on the opposite side. On top, you can find the 3.5 mm headphone jack and a micro USB 2.0 port. Speakers are also located at the bottom.
OVERALL/VERDICT
It looks beautiful, has similar design to iPhone 5, but this is as far as it goes in terms of comparison. Compared to the Jiayu G4T, the G5 is nothing new, has the same specifications from head to foot except for a revised design. We would have loved a 1080p display as well as 4G support to set it apart from its predecessor, but it seems Jiayu still hasn’t adapted to the FHD trend.
Included in the package: 3.5 mm Earphone, USB data cable, Travel Charger, Jiayu G5 Android Phone (1 GB DDR3 RAM, 4 GB Storage and 2000mAh battery)
